Founded and created by renowned Hong Kong banker Stanley Kwan, HSI began its trading on November 24, 1969. Currently, it is maintained by Hang Seng Indexes Company Limited, a subsidiary of Hang Seng Bank, which is, in turn, listed with the largest market capitalization to date. Despite being a publicly-traded company, the majority of stocks are held by the British financial firm HSBC.
The Hang Seng Index (HSI) is the main indicator of the overall performance of the Hong Kong Market. The largest companies in the region are being monitored daily, basing the changes on fluctuations of the stock index value. The HSI is a free float-adjusted market, where each of its components is measured according to the total market value of their outstanding shares. Around 49 constituents stocks comprising the Hang Seng Index, representing about 60% capitalization of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
